Official French exams
The DELF (Diplôme d'études en langue française – Diploma in French Language Studies) and the DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française – Advanced Diploma in French Language Studies) are the official French language proficiency certifications issued by the French Ministry of National Education. They are aligned with the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
They are internationally recognized diplomas that are valid for life.They are widely recognized qualifications by universities, educational institutions, public administrations, and in competitive civil service examinations, and they are highly valued in the professional world.
Official French language certificates
There are a total of six official French language diplomas.
- DELF-Diplôme d’études en langue française : A1, A2, B1, B2.
- DALF-Diplôme approfondi de langue française : C1, C2.
What is assessed in the official French language examinations?
4 language skills are assessed
- Comprensión oral / 25 puntos
- Comprensión escrita / 25 puntos
- Producción oral / 25 puntos
- Producción escrita / 25 puntos
A minimum score of 50 out of 100 is required to pass. Scores in one language skill can compensate for lower scores in another. However, a score below 5 out of 25 in any individual skill is a failing grade and results in automatic failure.
For the DALF C2 examination, the total score is out of 100 points. A minimum score of 50 out of 100 is required to pass. The minimum required score for each of the two language skills is 10 out of 50.
Official French Exams by Age Group
There are several versions of the DELF official French language examinations, adapted to different age groups, all of which have the same value. The diplomas awarded are identical.
- DELF Tout public (For all candidates): Intended for adults and young people who are no longer enrolled in secondary education.
- DALF intended for adults and recommended for candidates aged 16 and over.
- DELF junior / scolaire (Junior / School): Intended for students in lower and upper secondary education.
- DELF Prim (For Primary School): Intended for primary school students.
- DELF Pro (Professional Option): Intended for candidates seeking career advancement or employment in a French-speaking environment, or who are undertaking initial or continuing vocational training.
